  Hi Everyone

All the votes have been counted and here are the
results:

Gregory Maguire: Wicked: The Life and Times of the
Wicked Witch of the West

Angela Carter: Nights at the Circus

Suzy McKee Charnas: The Conqueror's Child (The Holdfast
Chronicles, Book 4)

Mary Gentle: A Secret History: The Book of Ash 1

As for the order of which they will be read, we need to speak
with the nominators to see if there are any time restraints
for them about which month they will be able to lead discussions.
This will be announced next week.

Thank you for such a great turn out!

Terri

Question about Conqueror's Child - This is book 4 - How necessary is reading
the first 3 in the series?
Can this book stand alone or will the experience be less if you haven't? Advice
from those who had read this. Thanks. Pat.

I would think it would be pretty important. I've started CC, but not
finished it, and I don;t think the characterizations would be very
understandable without the previous three books. In particular, I
don't think SMC captures/explains the various 'countries' which
shaped the various characters.

Of course, I might just be a little biased! These books are
wonderful, and disturbing, and should be read by all!

The first two came back into print in a single edition. Info: _Walk
to the end of the world & Motherlines_ by Suzy McKee Charnas.
The Woman's Press 1995 isbn 0-7043-4154-9. It doesn't say
anything about a US distributor, but I've bought two copies in the
US, so someone must distribute it!

The Third is _The Furies_

Is Suzy still onlist?

To understand Conqueror's Child, I think you need to have read the first 2
and preferably all 3. They are definitely worth reading (intro texts for
the history of feminist SF). The first 2 are fairly quick reads, but maybe
we should put that discussion for month 3 or 4 to let people have a chance
to read the others first.

To all-
I agree, I think Conqueror's Child should be the last one of the four. I
love to read - and read every day - but, if I need to read three other books
to fully understand the fourth, I'm gonna need a little more time to digest
it all. I definitely vote for the Gregory McGuire book to be first, I'm
excited to reread it and even more excited to discuss it.
Heather

There has been considerable discussion about this series of books. I assume
it's in the archives.

Out of the corner of my eye this week I noticed someone asking for info =
on biographies of Mary Shelley but I've deleted the messages and can't =
remember which of the 2 lists this appeared on.
There is a new bio of Shelley by Miranda Seymour (London: John Murray, =
GBP25) although amazon.co.uk alleges this is not yet published (though =
the _Literary Review_, where I just read the review of it, is already =
offering it via their bookship at a reduced price) - however, their =
listing under Mary Shelley cites numerous studies, also her published =
letters, as well numerous editions of Frankenstein and other works. This =
should provide some suggestions for things to look up in libraries or =
get them to access for you.
The Seymour book doesn't seem to be listed yet on amazon.com but =
'Mary Shelley' brings up 365 hits!
