I can't quite remember the title of the Keith Hartman book that I just
read and found very clever and amusing, but I was wondering if there has
ever been a discussion on either feminist sf lists about it. I can't
remember reading one. Has anyone read it? For the most part, I really
enjoyed it, but there were a few parts which I didn't like as well. The
novel was told from the point of view of many different characters and I
just thought the male voices were better rendered --what I mean is that
occasionally the women would make remarks that seemed less authentic.

But I really enjoyed the mystery-sci-fi combo. Generally I don't read
mysteries at all but this one certainly kept me engaged and reading until
the end. I was impressed.

I'm hoping on the off chance that someone knows the answer to this
question. A few years ago I went to a reading/talk with Samuel Delany and
Octavia Butler at MIT. Delany read an essay? I think about his
relationship with his father and discussed the connection between that
essay and Pheron and his father in Flight from Neveryon. I am pretty sure
he said that the essay had been published or would be published in an
upcoming book. Does anyone know the title of that book? Sorry to be so
unspecific. Unfortunately I can't remember any more details. It is also
possible I'm completely remembering wrong and this discussion was a
figment of my imagination.

Thanks
Kirsten

There may be something iu the new Shorter Views just published by New England
(which I don't have) but I recall something similar in the English (augmented)
edition of The Motion of Light on Water (1990). Knowing when you heard this
would help pinpoint it. I don't recall it showing up in Silent Interviews
(1994) or Longer Views (1996).

Perhaps you refer to the Media in Transition panel with Samuel
Delany and Octavia Butler in 1998. There's a transcript of that:
http://media-in-
transition.mit.edu/science_fiction/transcripts/butler_delany_index.h
tml
There's also a link to an essay/opening remarks by Butler, but not
by Delany.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Petra. Thanks everyone. The talk was definitely part of that 1998
MIT media and Transition series (great series everyone who lives in the
Boston area should check it out, they have several readings each year).
Unfortunately the parts of the transcript that were posted on the web site
(though very interesting) do not include Delany actually reading his work;
instead it is mostly the question and answer session afterwards which was
terrific. But I will see if can check out Shorter Views and The Motion
of Light and Water. Maybe it is in shorter views since I'm pretty sure he
said that it was not yet published. But maybe that was Butler mentioning
the Parable of the Talents --I remember I was excited to learn the sequel
to Sower was coming out. Oh well. Thanks.
