Yesterday I sent individual emails to everyone I had on record indicating interest in a copy. I expect to have about a half dozen copies available beyond what was spoken for. Angela Barclay mentioned proposing an informal FEMSF BDG for ILLICIT PASSAGE in the late summer or early fall. Please call or email the store at orders@mystgalaxy.com (note -- please use this email, not my office email) with your payment info if you are still interested in a copy. Please note that Alison/Alice was kind enough to sign all of the copies. The book is $6.50 US plus shipping. If you prefer for it to be sent US Priority Mail, the cost will be around $10 total. UPS delivery will be slightly more. For delivery outside the continental US, please inquire. They got to discussing the general topic of fighting women in ancient civilisation, and, of course, this led to Amazons - myth and evidence. One of the explanations for the Amazon stories is that they sprung from contact (= conflict!) with a nomadic tribe from the steppes, in which women fought on horseback alongside men. The average height of these women was around 5 foot 6 inches - and they were quite big boned. The average height of a greek warrior at this time, they claim, was 5 foot nothing at all. The archeological evidence that these big women fought has to do with the wounds in their skeletons, which were battle-type wounds, and the type of artefacts they were buried with, which were honourable- battle -important -person type artefacts. Interesting that Elliot would have chosen as her setting, a steppe-dwelling horse-riding tribe that's quite like the only known archeological evidence for the existence of Amazons. I wonder if she knew about this? (FYI - the title of the documentary episode was 'Gladiator Girls' - part of a series called 'Secrets of the Dead' on UK's channel 4. Co-production with a US outfit - possibly the History Channel.) ------------------------------------------------------ This is the feministsf-lit listserve, intended only for discussion of feminism and Speculative Fiction.
