Laura Quilter / lquilter@exo.net ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 12:21:36 -0500 (CDT) From: Camille Bacon-Smith Reply-To: sfuf@csd.uwm.edu To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Academic Programming at Worldcon I am posting a general call for scholars who are attending the 2001 worldcon in Philadelphia this year (August 30-Sept 2, 2001) to participate in academic/literary critical programming. So far, we have had an outstanding response from academics who are also published science fiction writers, but we've had very few volunteers from the purely academic side of sfuf studies. Here's a bit of information to help you make up your mind: 1) Most of the panels will be discussion-based. You do not need to write a paper to participate, though volunteers are expected to have done sufficient study to make a cogent argument on their chosen panel. 2) Attending a worldcon is expensive, and generally not reimbursable by your university. However, I have about fifteen "contingent reimbursment slots to fill with academics. That means, if the convention breaks even financially (which usually happens), the committee refunds your membership fee. So, if you were planning to attend anyway, this is a good way to save a little money down the pike. And if you weren't, it is a good incentive to try a worldcon out! If you are local and want to attend for only one day, you can pay the daily fee, which will be equally as reimbursible as the full fee. So, here are the panel topics. Please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested in participating on one or more panels.
