Lauderdale Airport Hilton ICFA 2003 Pedagogy Workshop Best Laid Plans: Favorite Syllabi for Teaching SF, F & H Or, It Isn't Stealing If They Give It To You Broad Overview For the first ICFA Pedagogy Workshop, those of us with a magnanimous spirit will share our favorite syllabus for a science fiction, fantasy or horror class that we have taught. Fine Print Anyone who is interested is welcome to participate. Syllabi that are submitted before February 15, 2003 will be compiled into a ZIP archive that will be available on the web and possibly distributed on disk at the conference. Those who want to participate but retain a Luddite's fear of electronic distribution are welcome to limit their exposure by bringing hard copies to the workshop or, for the truly technophobic, by being ready to recite their syllabus aloud. Submitted syllabi (one per customer we only want your favorite) should be stripped of such boilerplate (attendance policies, office hours, etc.) as would be irrelevant and sent to Craig Jacobsen at in some Word-compatible format with a subject line "ICFA Pedagogy Workshop" or something similarly revealatory. Brief contextualizing remarks would be helpful (Why these texts? Why teach them in this order? What works in this class? What might be tricky?), but are not deal breakers. Statement of Democratic Ideals Again, anyone is welcome to participate. If you have ever taught, taken, or thought about teaching or taking, a science fiction, fantasy or horror class, come and share your insights, experiences and musings. Lauderdale Airport Hilton ICFA 2003 Speed Panel Something to think about: What's With All of the Remakes? Moderator: Craig Jacobsen Confirmed Panelists: Brett Cox Veronica Hollinger Rob Latham Gary Wolfe TBA The Question In an era where original (not previously filmed) SF films (The Matrix, Men in Black, The Truman Show, Galaxy Quest, Frequency, Contact, etc.) earn moderate to substantial financial and/or critical success, what economic, artistic or societal circumstances drive the ongoing trend to remake 60s and 70s SF films (Rollerball, Planet of the Apes, The Time Machine, Solaris, Drew Barrymore is developing Barbarella, Logan's Run is under consideration at Warner Brothers, Arnold Schwarznegger or Kurt Russel may star in a remake of Omega Man, Joel Silver is developing Westworld, again, with Arnold, etc.)? The Format The idea of the panel is to encourage as much interaction with the audience as possible, and therefore the panel will work something like this: the moderator will present a brief introduction to the question, at which point each panelist, who has had a year to ponder the question, will get five minutes to present a succinct response. After each panelist has spoken, we'll run through the panel once more for a two-minute followup in case anyone wants to respond to what another panelist has said. After that, we'll open things up to the audience who, through this announcement of the question, will also have had time to consider their responses. Audience and panel responses should be pithy in order to encourage maximum exchange of ideas. If things lag, the moderator will have intriguing followup mystery questions prepared. Please attend and be a part of this fast-paced intellectual interchange. Please feel free to forward this call to other listservs and individuals who might be interested! The purpose of this email is to solicit people to participate in a panel discussion of Peter Jackson's films: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and (possibly) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (The Extended Edition). Information on participants and topics will be used to create a proposal for a panel discussion that will be submitted to the 2003 International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts (ICFA) Conference. More information on the ICFA Conference can be found later in this message. A panel discussion at ICFA is typically 4-5 people participating in an informal discussion with panelists and the audience rather than formal (and longer) presentations based on papers. ICFA allows people to present a paper in a session as well as to participate in a panel discussion Deadline for application to panel to be received (email preferred w/hard copy backup): October 10, 2002 Background on Topic: One of the highlights of the 2002 ICFA conference was the panel discussion bringing together Tolkien specialists to talk about their responses to Jackson's first film. This proposed panel is intended to be a continuation of that discussion, focusing on The Two Towers and, if participants are interested, upon the Extended Edition of The Fellowship of the Ring. The deadlines for this call and for submission to ICFA dictate that neither TTT nor the extended edition id FOTR have yet been released, so participants cannot send exact information about what they would say during the panel discussion. However, last year's discussion proved people all have definite opinions about the film(s) already, so I'm prepared to submit a fairly-opened description of this proposed panel discussion to ICFA. Additionally, I plan to encourage communication among the panel in December/January/ February after the release dates! If you are interested in participating, please mail or email a one-page statement with the following information-- Name Snailmail address Email address Telephone number Your teaching, critical, scholarly, or fandom specialization/areas of interest as relating to Tolkien and/or Jackson A brief (1-3 paragraph) statement about the issue or issues you think you would like to address during your time for speaking-- to: Robin Reid Literature and Languages A&M-Commerce Robin_Reid@tamu-commerce.edu 903.886.5268 Each panelist will have 5-10 minutes for individual statements, then the discussion will be opened up for audience questions and participation.
