I have been nudging my mind and it seems to me that the story described is
very like the novel _The Handmaid's Tale_ by Margaret Atwood.
I have been enjoying the discussions on this list. I have been reading
science fiction for over 50 years, started with the Heinlein juveniles and the
Red, Green, Blue, violet, etc.. Storybooks. Several years ago I started to
limit my reading to almost exclusively books by women while still maintaining
a subscription to _Analog_ and _The Magazine of Fantasy and Science fiction_.
I teach theology at Villanova University which is very close to Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania in the United States (East Coast port city between New York and
Washington D.C.)
I also mud.

NH: :) Point well taken, as I found out when trying to read from a piece
of mine in which the three main characters have similar names.
