From LISTSERV@listserv.uic.edu Fri Jan 26 13:38:54 2001 Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 14:58:58 -0600 From: "L-Soft list server at UIC (1.8d)" To: Laura Quilter Subject: File: "FEMINISTSF LOG0009C" ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 22:14:51 EDT Reply-To: "For discussion of feminist SF, fantastic & utopian literature" Sender: "For discussion of feminist SF, fantastic & utopian literature" From: Christine Ethier Subject: xanth novels MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I recenlty just read _Faun and Games_ by Piers Anthony. Its the first time I've read a new Xanth novel in years. And it occured to me that he seems to be getting tired of the series, perhaps. I never saw the xanth novels as sexist until I read _The Color of Her Panties_ personally I thought that one was just plain sick. But his female characters did have character. They were for the most part, more intelligent or ambitionous then their male counterparts. In fact, in some of the realtionships their is a sense of the woman making the man a tad bit stronger (i.e. Irene and Dor). But _Faun and Games_ seems different. The female characters seem sterotypical, in fact most of the characters seem flat. Even Mare Imbrimi seems not to be herself., and this upset me because she was one of my long time favorite characters. To me, the book seemed to be little more then a listing of puns. After reading anthony's afterword, I thought perhaps I was the reason for it. He talked about giving a lecutre concerning, as he put it, his "more serious" writing. Could it be that he now lacks interst in Xanth, perhaps resents it because it is the series that he is primary known for , and only writes the book so he makes money? I know that this is slightly off topic, but I was wondering if it was just, or does anyone else feel the same way?
