Her husband, William A.P. White, known professionally as Anthony Boucher, was a well-known mystery and science fiction author and editor, as well as a longtime mystery critic, first for the San Francisco Chronicle and then simultaneously for the New York Times and the Herald Tribune (the latter as H. H. Holmes). Phyllis was born April 28, 1915, in Columbia, MO, and came to Berkeley as an infant. Her father was a professor of German at the University of California. Phyllis married Tony White in 1938, the same year she graduated from UC Berkeley with a Masters from the School of Librarianship. Most of you who are receiving this e-mail will remember Phyllis through her literary connections. Her husband helped found Mystery Writers of America and was an original member of the Northern California chapter. Phyllis was active in both the local chapter and the national organization. She was also honored as Member Number One at each Bouchercon, the world mystery convention created in 1970 and named after Tony White because of his great influence on the genre and its authors. While her husband was founding editor of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in the 1950s, Phyllis screened unsolicited submissions and helped discover some of the talent published in that magazine. She was also a founding member of The Scowrers and Molly Maguires of San Francisco, the local chapter of the Baker Street Irregulars. An active member until her death, she was honored by them last year as "the Woman," which is quite an honor for a Sherlockian. Phyllis was active in musical circles. She sang with the San Francisco Municipal Chorus, which later evolved into the Winifred Baker Chorale, for over 50 years, and managed their scholarship program as well. She contributed a large collection of Chorus historical documents to the San Francisco Performing Arts Library and Museum. During the last few years she sang with the Berkeley Madrigal Singers. She was also an avid opera fan, attending the San Francisco Opera as a subscriber for the past 50 years. Phyllis is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Larry and Mary White, Sunnyvale, CA; James and Mary White, Newport Beach, CA; grandson Thomas White; and granddaughter Chimene Stewart. At Phyllis' request, there will be no funeral service. A private gathering for family and friends is pending. Memorial donations in her name may be sent to: The Merola Opera Program, War Memorial Opera House, 301 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102. -------------------------------------------------- This is the FEMINISTSF listserve, intended only for discussion of feminism and Speculative Fiction.
