Recently I asked people if they knew of any science fiction writers
using cyborgs for a conference I was organising.
Well no news on the conference yet but...

I'm going to Tokyo in a couple of weeks.
Does anyone have any contacts (or knowledge of people)
in Tokyo
who I could have a really informal chat with about
Manga / Anime / Science Fiction /
or women characters / cyborgs
or Japanese culture
?!
Maybe a tall order - but I don't want to rule any possibilities out.

It would just be nice to be able to meet people when we get there
(I'm travelling with my husband - an architect).

If anyone could let me have the email address of anyone, I'd be very
very grateful.

Thanks,
Melanie Latham.

Yes we are out there! Or here - which one would it be? Not reading nearly
as much as I would like to except of course educational material. I
sometimes think I'm going to forget how to read for pleasure! I love to
read the postings - kind of reading vicariously through everyone on the
list!

The Mysterious Galaxy book discussion group read PROXIES for Wed.
night's discussion. It was interesting -- most of the members of the
group dabble at least a little in all of our genres (defined as SF,
mystery, fantasy and horror for the purposes of the group), although we
do have those who don't care for one or more genres and just come to the
genres which interest them. Not very many read hard SF on a regular
basis, and 70% were frankly thrown by PROXIES. Between the "in your
face" style and the various format devices, they were lost. Not critical
of what you'd done, Laura, just feeling it wasn't for them. Lots of
positive comments on little things thought that felt very "real" despite
the SF setting.

Pax,

Maryelizabeth

This isn't strictly feminist in nature (thus I'm posting on the general
list rather than the lit list), but I thought some of you might find it
interesting. It's a CTHEORY article titled "Fakeshop: Science Fiction,
Future Memory & The Technoscientific Imaginary" by Eugene Thacker. A very
engaging read.

Hi, Maryelizabeth! Thanks for the comments.

It's become clear to me from feedback like this that I made PROXIES --
especially the first third (which is the worst place to do it) -- too
challenging for readers who don't read hard SF on a regular basis. I am
determined not to make that mistake again, and have been working on making
following books more accessible.
