But the food in the hotel is okay--on the expensive side. But you will be within 3-4 blocks of some amazing places in downtown Madison. If you can tear yourself away for just a little while on Sat a.m. the farmer's market on the square around the statehouse is really something to experience. Wonderful cinnamon rolls. If you like exploring and trying new things, there are just tons of little ethnic restaurants--not many chain type places, if you want that "I know exactly what I'll be getting" feeling, but everything we tried was wonderful. Our experience was that it's not hard to find good affordable food in the area. Can't wait to hear the con reports when you all get back! Whew! It sounds liek you've never been to Madison! The con is at the state capitol square, at the end of a street about a mile long which goes to campus, and is solid campus-commercial. there are scores of places to eat, dozens interesting or good. Pick your continent. A dinner group might work best; maybe pick a couple good restartants and post a sign-up sheet for head-count and votes. Madison is the Platonic ideal of a college town, and there are dozens of good places to choose from. What's your pleasure: Indian? Nepalese? Turkish? Ethiopian? _quality_ Mexican? Cornish pasties? These are the places I take out-of-town visitors because they're so special. I recommend choosing between either of the fabulous Nepali restaurants on the 300 block of State Street. Both serve vegan/veggie/carnivore fare, ranging from mellow to spicy. All restaurants are non-smoking in Madison, BTW. CHAUTARA is the more "upscale" sit-down restaurant. Prices: $6.00-$15.00, portions generous, the Tofu Secawa and Lamb/Chicken Palungo are stars among a bright firmament. 334 State St, Madison. 251-3626. Hours: 11 am-10 pm Mon.-Thurs.; 11 am-11 pm Fri. & Sat.; 4-9 pm; Sun. Alcohol served Bar Carryout Orders Credit Cards ok First Floor wheelchair accessible, sometimes have tea lights burning at tables, no incense They take reservations. HIMAL CHULI is more of a shoebox, some room inside, lots of folks take food out. Prices: $5.50-$10.00. Their dal is the most heavenly thing I've ever tasted that had a lentil in it. Their roti (flat bread with yogurt) is delightful. 318 State St, Madison. 251-9225. Hours: 11 am-9 pm Mon.-Wed.; 11 am-9:30 pm Thurs.-Sat.; noon-8:30 pm Sun. Alcohol served, no credit cards, one can get a wheelchair inside but it's hard to turn around, incense sometimes. They don't take reservations. Getting there. Leave hotel main door, turn left: You are on Dayton St headed to State St. Walk two blocks. Turn right, crossing Dayton at State. You are on the even side of the 200 block of State Street. Keep on that side of the street, and walk away from the Capitol (towards Bascom Hill, where the university is). Cross Johnson St and you are almost there -- Himal Chuli first, then Chautara. -- Jesse the K -- Madison, WI USA -- mailto:jesse_the_k@yahoo.com Where am I going, and how did I get in this handbasket? -------------------------------------------------- This is the FEMINISTSF listserve, intended only for discussion of feminism and Speculative Fiction. Don't try to do everything because you just plain can't. Do visit the web site first and think about 1st and 2nd choices for panels in advance. Be prepared for the best designed con program *ever* (they keep getting better, I don't know how they do it!) Also be prepared for exceptionally interesting conversations with everyone there, because Wiscon draws very interesting people. Ellen Klages as Tiptree auctioneer always makes me double over with laughter. The hotel's air conditioning can be *very effective*, so layer and bring a shirt even if the weather's predicted to be hot. Also plan on meeting some of your favorite authors, as it's a very friendly, "we're all humans together" sort of atmosphere. You can sub to a pre-con newsletter at www.sf3.org/ecube/index.html The biggest minus for me has been the small, slow elevators. If you can possibly walk the stairs, do!
