Has anyone read it? I am only 15 or so pages in, but thus far I see similarities to others of her books- especially... what was the name.... can't remmeber.... dammit... the one where the "virus" altered people into their subconscious desired state... had the siamese twins who are transported into a far future. Sideshow! And perhaps Family Tree also ringing bells. So far my favourite is Singer from the Sea, but I think I am somehat alone in that. And perhaps her style in the other books I mentioned is more unique, after all. Really liked some of her recent stuff, including SINGER and FAMILY TREE and especially SIX MOON DANCE. To me, THE VISITOR felt more like PLAGUE OF ANGELS or SHADOW'S END, neither of which I felt measured up to her usual standards. YMMV. I do like the married couple -- Zoey and her husband -- and like the positive aspect of the "Saloon girl" character being the one who lends the ragtag band of outlaws respectability. Plus any current SF show which doesn't make ships with whooshing noises and loud bangs during the "space" shots gets extra points from me. I'm cross posting this because it seems more appropriate for the Feminist SF list than the FEM-SF LIT list, as there are currently no "Firefly" books to reference. :) Maryelizabeth -- ******************************************************************* Mysterious Galaxy Books Local Phone: 858.268.4747 7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, Suite 302 Fax: 858.268.4775 San Diego, CA 92111 Long Distance/Orders: 1.800.811.4747 http://www.mystgalaxy.com General Email: mgbooks@mystgalaxy.com ******************************************************************* -------------------------------------------------- This is the FEMINISTSF listserve, intended only for discussion of feminism and Speculative Fiction. The apparently whole-cloth mythology didn't work for me, neither did the Fell. The story never quite seemed to come together -- I've read it twice and have trouble remembering much about it. I recently re-read "The Family Tree", and aside from strong reservations about the Umminhi upshot, I really love it. I've found several that I wasn't mad about the first time have grown on me with re-reading -- Singer From the Sea and Shadow's End, for instance. I'm still not sure about The Fresco. There's a lot there that I like, but the nanotech-control-for-everyone's-good thread makes me extremely uneasy. Somehow the Hobbs Land Gods (Raising the Stones) and the Message Crystal (Jinian) approach seem more acceptable. They could at least be opted out of by the unconvinced. But nanotechnology gives me the creeps anyway -- especially after its malignity in Sideshow.
