I think we will find a lot of such women in literature. Finding them in
popular culture is another matter entirely. However, since we are on the
subject, (and it is on-topic for this list !?!?), I feel I must put in a
vote for the female scientist in David Brin's Earth.
She founds and gives real science to Gaia Theory, consequently becoming a
goddess figure for all sorts of Gaia religions. After that she does not
sit on her laurels but is very active and exploratory. I don't want to
ruin for anyone, but she is a central character and is smart, excited,
unattached (though not neutered), and IMHO one of the coolest characters
ever. I can't remember her name but sometimes I can't remember the names
of my closest friends.
