Apologies if someone has already suggested this (I'm catching up on about
a week's worth of messages), but Nicole Griffith's _Ammonite_ features a
main character who (and I quote) has "an ability to spend large periods of
time alone, an innate belief in herself, a prodigious linguistic talent,
and superb physical fittness." Moreover, she's not the only strong woman
in the book.
