For feminist hard-sf try Slow River by Nicola Griffith, which just won
the Nebula and which will tell you everything you could possibly want to
know about the science and technology of sewage disposal (I kid you not).
It's wonderful. Also check out Joan Slonczewski's The Door into Ocean and
Daughter of Elysium (she's an internationally known bacteriologist) and
Catherine Asaro's first two novels (she's a physicist). Also Nancy
Kress's Beggar's trilogy.
