There's a wonderful SERIES of books by Joan Aiken (as well as some
wonderful collections of short stories like A SMALL PINCH OF WEATHER).
"Black Hearts in Battersea" was the sequel to "The Wolves of Willoughby
Chase", and set off a whole series, mostly featuring the young heroine
Dido Twite: "Night Birds in Nantucket" was one of the best. They are all
set in the early nineteenth century in an alternative history in which
England is ruled by Jacobites rather than Hanoverians (and, hence, no
American War of Independence).
