there's a wonderful book by joan aiken called Black Hearts in Battersea (i
think) about two children escaping from their horrible governess and her
evil plots. was that the one you were thinking of, emily? she also has a
collection of scary short stories for kids called A Touch of Chill or
something like that that gave me nightmares for years.
