The 'real' Mary Poppins as portrayed by P.L. Travers in the Poppins
series is no sugary Julie Andrews... and, perfect for this list, is
the fact that when she isn't with the family on Cherry Tree Lane, she's
taking care of princes on another planet. (In one book they come down
looking for her and she's quite displeased.)

Is she a feminist? Let's just say she efficiently stages a takeover of
the Banks family with its bureacratic petit bourgeois patriarch and there
is no romance with the chimney sweep!
