Not the individual, the society, or group within the society, as a whole. I
don't think any demographic historian has answered this entirely to everyone's
satisfaction, but on changing population patterns in the W European working
classes since around 1800, Wally Seccombe's 'Weathering the Storm' is pretty
good.
